In 1540 the Rhine flowed north of today's Schenkenschans, made a turn to the north and then split at the Lobith mill into Rhine and Waal. Gradually a new Waal arm formed south of Schenkenschans, which plunged into the original Waal at Bimmen with a bend to the north. This is how an island was formed, called 's Gravenwaard. Because the Oude Waal became bogged down, the larger ships could soon no longer sail past the Tolhuis. They took the new Waal, of which the current Vossegat is still a remnant. The lord, Duke William of Cleves, had a Tolkamer built on the 's Gravenwaard and he ordered the skippers there to pay the toll. This can be considered the origin of Tolkamer.
