Castle Valkenburg is a castle ruin in the South Limburg fortified town of Valkenburg. The rare height castle for the Netherlands is located on the Heunsberg, an extension of the Margraten plateau.
Castle Valkenburg has been destroyed several times throughout history. The last time was in the Disaster Year 1672. In that year, the Netherlands was attacked from various sides, including by France. Castle Valkenburg briefly fell into French hands with the aim of conquering Maastricht. When Dutch troops managed to retake Valkenburg, it was decided to destroy the castle and city walls in such a way that the fortified town could never pose a threat to Maastricht again. By order of Stadtholder William III, the height castle was blown up and the fortress was dismantled.
After a devastating city fire in 1773, the people of Valkenburg used the castle ruin as a quarry to rebuild the destroyed houses in Valkenburg. The large, almost 30-meter long north wall of the castle was completely demolished and other walls were also torn down. Vaults were smashed and hard stone window frames were broken out.
