En la estación, Karel van de Woestijne fue alguna vez "el prisionero" de los alemanes durante dos horas en julio de 1916. Aunque había obtenido permiso para ello, no se le permitió entrar en la ciudad de etapa Gante y tuvo que esperar dos horas al siguiente tren: "Compré puros. Probé todas las marcas que estaban allí disponibles. Mientras tanto, estudié la estación: la había aborrecido hasta ahora; ahora la encontraba extraordinariamente bien construida, porque la prisión suaviza el juicio sobre la arquitectura. (...) Me atreví a acercarme a la sala de espera. Dentro de esa sala de espera había un mostrador monumental en estilo neo-gótico, provisto de brillantes grifos de cerveza."
