Khon Buri, en tailandés, significa el origen del río, que se refiere a uno de los afluentes del río Mun que pasa por ahí. En el pasado, se llamaba Ban Khon Buri. Cuando el pueblo creció, se cambió a Mueang Khon y finalmente a Khon Buri. En 1907 d.C., esta área era un subdistrito del distrito de Chok Chai. Se llamaba King Amphoe Chae porque el centro de la ciudad estaba en Tambon Chae.
