De Vrijdagsmarkt was ooit het belangrijkste plein van de stad, De meeste gebouwen van de Vrijdagmarkt dateren uit de 18e eeuw, het socialistische volkshuis (Ons Huis, Bond Moyson) zelfs uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Hoewel het grote Art Nouveau-raam en het hoefijzervenster de aandacht trekken, is het een voorbeeld van 'stijlmengeling' of eclecticisme. Ooit was hier de eerste Gentse volkskliniek gevestigd.
