Huldenberg March IJse-Laan (RCOZ)

Theme: The route is largely based on the success of the Refugee Walk Druivenstreek and follows the courses of IJsevallei and Laanvallei and the plateau between the two valleys. Duration: +/- 2.5 hours.

This is a walk designed or adapted by the Rotary Club Overijse-Zoniën (RCOZ) as part of the action "Walking and cycling for more greenery and nature in the Druivenstreek". This promotion runs from 21 March 2021 to 5 June 2021 (World Environment Day). The aim of the action is above all to reflect on the importance of greenery and nature in the Druivenstreek and to raise awareness about it. Specifically, RCOZ wants to use this campaign to raise funds for other sustainable trees in the Druivenstreek. Information about the action and participation in the walks can be http://www.rcoz.be. The walk goes from the center of Huldenberg through the Ijse valley along the Smeysbos, then over the plateau to the Laan valley, then via the Rodebos, Vossenkouter and Breembos to the center of Huldenberg. These two valleys (IJse and Laan) are important links between the two forests of this region, the Sonian Forest and the Meerdaal Forest. The promenade runs along beautiful slow roads, of which the municipality of Huldenberg rebuilds an average of seven per year.

In the Spatial Structure Plan of Flanders (RVS), Huldenberg belongs to the rural area (not to the Flemish Diamond or the Flemish urban area around Brussels). In concrete terms, this means that living, working and community facilities are grouped together as much as possible in the nuclei in order to safeguard the space open to agriculture, nature and the forest.

Huldenberg has a 25% space requirement. This is low compared to the other municipalities of the Druivenstreek, Overijse 47%, Tervuren 40% and Hoeilaart 39%. And also compared to the average in Flanders 33%. Nevertheless, the open space is also occupied at a fast pace in Huldenberg (125 m² per day). Fortunately, nature is still common in the municipality. The forests and meadows along the Ijse and Laan (as well as the Dijle) are largely designated as nature reserves. But also open agricultural areas with typical hollow roads and small forests at the top of the plateaus are still common in the municipality. During this walk we can fully enjoy it.

A shorter route is when you reach the top of the plateau on the Nijvelsebaan to turn right and pass the Stroobantsstraat to the Breembosstraat and continue to the right. This route is just under 4 km.
