The Klenderhof was planned in 1932 by the Berlin architect Otto Firle on behalf of Charlotte Baldner, a daughter of the Jewish department store owner Leopold Lindemann, who had sold his 17 department stores to the Karstadt Group. Firle had sketched the first draft on the back of a menu at the Kampen Kurhaus. The client donated the facility to her husband, the renowned cellist Max "Bimbo" Baldner, who had achieved international fame with the Klingler Quartet. On 30 January 1933, the day Hitler seized power, the shell of the building was completed, and the Baldner family moved in in the autumn.
