During the Commune uprising of 1871, the column was toppled at the suggestion of the painter Gustave Courbet with the intention of using the bronze for cannons again, but after the uprising was suppressed, the column was re-erected at the order of Marshal Mac-Mahon, the president of the French Republic. The costs of the re-erection were charged to Courbet, who would have to pay 10,000 francs each year, which is about 43,000 euros. However, he died in exile before the first installment could be paid.
