Nel quartiere Belle Epoque - Zurenborg hanno vissuto in passato molti militari che svolgevano la loro funzione nelle caserme della fortificazione di Brialmont. Le abitazioni civili di Zurenborg erano generalmente appartamenti in affitto della Società Edilizia di Zurenborg. I militari preferivano affittare piuttosto che comprare una casa poiché potevano essere trasferiti in altre città.
Nella rotonda di Cogels-Osylei hanno vissuto un tempo molti ufficiali di alto rango. Più vasi c'erano sulla facciata, più "stelle e strisce" aveva anche l'ufficiale. Per i militari di grado inferiore furono costruette piccole casette di meno di 60 metri quadrati.
Il Cogels-Osylei fu costruito alla fine del XIX e all'inizio del XX secolo - la Belle Epoque - in stili come il jugendstil, l'art nouveau, lo stile eclettico e il neoclassicismo.
Lo scrittore/poeta noto Herman De Coninck, che abitava in questa strada, chiamò nel suo poema 'Thuis' il quartiere anche in modo giocoso 'Burenzorg'.
