S-chanf nævnes første gang omkring 1137-39 som Scaneves. I 1356 blev det nævnt som Scanevo.
Det romanske navn S-chanf udtales [ʃtɕanf]. Den tyske Scanfs var officiel indtil 1943.
Chapella er stedet for et kapel nævnt i 1209. Susauna nævnes som Sauzana i 1285.
S-chanf har et areal, pr. 2006, på 138 km2. Af dette areal bruges 23,7% til landbrugsformål, mens 18,6% er skovdækket. Af resten af jorden er 0,6% bebygget, og resten er ikke-produktiv.
