I 1485 ankom colombus fattig i havnen i Parlos. Han tilbragte sin nat på det nærliggende franciskanerkloster La Rábida, som huser rejsende gratis. Det er fra denne havn, at han sejlede 7 år senere, den 3. august 1492 med Pinta, Niña og Santa María. Den scene blev malet af Evaristo Dominguez. De tre skibe landede i Amerika den 12. oktober 1492. Santa María gik ned i amerikanske farvande, men de to andre skibe vendte tilbage til Palos den 15. marts 1493.
