Forum Romanum var i oldtiden centrum for Rom. Forumet var i storhedens dage i det Romerske Rige det politiske, juridiske, religiøse og kommercielle centrum for byen.
Oprindeligt var Forum Romanum en åben slette mellem bakkerne Capitol, Palatin, Velia og Esquilijn. Efter at myrket var tørlagt, blev det et sted at handle, organisere politiske møder og opretholde religiøse praksisser. Der sprang en naturlig kilde, og en bæk løb igennem, Velabrum, som munde ud i et sumpet område ved Tiber. Bækken strømmede fra dalene af de nærliggende bakker Quirinal, Viminaal, Oppius og Cispius og krydsede forummet fra nord til syd. Velabrum blev ved forummet yderligere fyldt af forskellige kilder og småbække, hvoraf den vigtigste lå på Velia. De lavere dele af dalen var sumpede og oversvømmede regelmæssigt.
