Finnentrop, with around 3,500 inhabitants, is the largest district of the municipality of the same name, Finnentrop, in the Olpe district of North Rhine-Westphalia in the southern part of the Sauerland.
The name Finnentrop goes back to the old place Finnentrop, which is now called Altfinnentrop and is located a few hundred meters upstream on the Bigge. The suffix "trop" is derived from "trop" or "torp" meaning "village" and is not uncommon in North Rhine-Westphalia. The present-day place Finnentrop had three place names until July 13, 1908: Habbecke, Neubrücke, and Bahnhof Finnentrop. Neubrücke consisted only of a single building at the confluence of the Bigge and Lenne rivers. The "New Bridge" was apparently already built in 1847, as the "Reuter" had to collect the toll for the bridge. The village of Habbecke, located further north and originally consisting of only a few farms, is believed to have been established in the Middle Ages.
