For centuries, the Hahnenmoor served the residents of the surrounding communities for the extraction of peat as fuel. Buckwheat was harvested on burnt heaths, and sheep kept the bushes and heath short. At the same time, the animals provided wool, fur, and meat. Many peatlands also host bees for honey production. Dying birches and the remnants of tree trunks protrude from the water surface, giving the landscape a surreal appearance. The area offers a view reminiscent of the paintings of Salvador Dali. Despite the successes of the Hahnenmoor restoration, it is still a true raised bog. The former interventions in nature were significant. In particular, industrial peat extraction has left its marks, and the recovery will take some time. Every year in early autumn, migratory birds can be observed in Hahnenmoor, including whooper swans, greylag geese, and cranes. It is noted that the cranes have chosen Hahnenmoor as their breeding ground. Where the water level is not sufficient to prevent a forested plant nursery, the heath is kept free of trees by a flock of sheep.
