Herzog-Ernst-Gymnasium Uelzen

The Herzog-Ernst-Gymnasium Uelzen is one of the grammar schools of the Hanseatic city of Uelzen in Lower Saxony, along with the Lessing-Gymnasium. It was first mentioned in 1333 as a Latin school. The grammar school was named after Ernst I, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg.
The first mentions were made as early as the 14th century, but it was not until 1535 that Duke Ernst left his birthplace at the end of Pastorenstraße to the school. But as early as 1538, the school, which at that time had only two classes, was located on the north side of the cemetery belonging to St. Mary's Church. In 1792, the school was moved to the south side, before it was housed in a building in Schillerstraße in 1904. In 1969, the school moved to its current building in Albertstraße.
