Salt Extraction
Today, in Holde in Salzbergen, only an information panel reminds us that the municipality rightfully bears its name. In the hope of finding gas, deep drilling was conducted by the Elwerath Oil Works in the years 1949/1950.
No gas was found, but at a depth of about 200 m, a large rock salt deposit was drilled, extending down to a depth of 640 m. This is also referred to as the “Salzbergener Sattel.” This salt deposit is particularly suitable for bathing purposes and for the extraction of table salt.
You can find the salt extraction panel on Salzweg in 48499 Salzbergen.
Following this, the city of Rheine acquired the extraction rights for the salt works at the Bentlage monastery from the mining authority and has been transporting brine (26%) through a pipeline from Salzbergen to Bentlage since 1959. However, in 1975, the extraction had to be discontinued due to the regulations of the mining authority.
By the end of the leaching process, 9,350 m³ of salt had been dissolved in this area.
