The historical name of Haastrecht is Havekesdrecht. This was first mentioned in 1108. Haastrecht originated around 1100 at the place where the peat river Vlist flows into the Hollandsche IJssel.
A castle was later built at this settlement, the foundations of which have been recovered.
Due to its location, Haastrecht was granted city rights in 1396. An important shipping route was via the Vlist to the Hollandse IJssel. In Haastrecht was the lock that connected both rivers. This lock was later destroyed by Dordrecht, due to competition in the taking by tolls from shipping.
Landmark buildings in Haastrecht are the town hall from 1618, the drawbridge over the IJssel from 1883 and the Reformed church, the first parts of which were created in the 13th century.
On the Hollandse IJssel towards Gouda was the monastery at Stein in which Desiderius Erasmus lived for some years.
