De Sint-Pietersabdij bestaat al minstens sinds 630.
Deze abdij werd bijna volledig verwoest door de Noormannen in 851.
In 975 was alles herbouwd en de abdij ginge een bloeiende periode tegemoet in de 12de en 13de eeuw met continue uitbreidingen.
Tijdens de godsdienstonlusten in de 16de eeuw werd in 1580 de romaanse kerk bijna volledig verwoest. Pas in de volgende eewu werd in 1629 de eerste steen gelegd van de huidige kerk.
Samengaand met de Franse Revolutie en de secularisering verdween in 1796 de abdij als instelling. De kerk werd gebruikt als opslagplaats en museum voor schilderijen en kunstschatten afkomstig uit andere opgeheven Gentse kerken en kloosters
