Sammen med dele af regionerne Alto Ampurdán, Gironés og Pla de l'Estany udgør det historiske og kulturelle territorium Ampurdán.
Bajo Ampurdán er den sydlige sektor, hvori den naturlige region Ampurdán traditionelt opdeles. I 1936, året for den første officielle komarkalisering i Catalonien, blev opdelingen af Ampurdán i to administrative regioner godkendt, baseret mere på økonomiske og markedsmæssige kriterier end på historiske, geografiske eller kulturelle. Grænsen mellem de to dele blev fastlagt ved at udnytte den imaginære linje, der strækker sig over Montgrí-massivet og som fortsætter langs vandopdelingslinjen mellem floderne Ter og Fluvià.
