Salinetas del Pedrón (salt pans) of Malpaís de Güímar - Tenerife

Although the Malpaís has very inhospitable conditions for traditional human activities, there is one that deserves to be mentioned because it has preserved interesting remains of ethnographic value: the small salt pans or salinetas on the coast at Punta del Pedrón.

From the fifteenth century onwards, the inhabitants built salt pans with rocks and mud that were flooded during the high tides.

This traditional use of salt indicates the importance of salt in the past , not only as a spice but especially for preserving food and especially fish at a time when refrigerators did not yet exist or were a luxury that only a few had at their disposal.
