With the opening of the Maasbrug in 1929, Grave had become the eastern gate of Brabant, and today's provincial road 324 was the national road that connected Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch. The construction of the Lady Chapel on this road was inspired by a sermon broadcast on the radio on 30 April 1946 by chaplain Hermus of St. John's Cathedral in Den Bosch about the statue of Mary that watches over in the west of Brabant on the Moerdijk and Our Lady spreading her worries from St. John's Cathedral. After hearing the sermon, Brother Rudolph of the Institute for the Blind in Grave, and Piet Pennings, chairman of the Catholic Workers Movement (KAB) independently drew the conclusion that a statue of the Virgin Mary should also watch over access to the province in the east.
