Jean-Jacques Rousseau schreef mid 18de eeuw dat Guernica (Baskisch: Gernica) de gelukkigste stad van de wereld was wegens de democratische opzet van besturen. Zoals gekend werd de stad in 1937 volledig plat gebobardeerd. Het bombardement van 26 april 1937 wordt in Guernica herdacht met een onopvallend monument bij de Mercuriusfontein.
