Im Tal des Gobertangebeek in Malen findet man den Gobertange-Kalksandstein, der vor Jahrhunderten im kleinen Maßstab als Baumaterial abgebaut wurde. Die Steinbänke haben eine Dicke von 10 bis 30 cm. Normalerweise hatten die Gruben eine Tiefe von 15 m, manchmal arbeitete man sogar in Tiefen von bis zu 25 m. Meistens begann man mit dem Abbau der unteren Steinbank. Dazu grub der Bergmann einen ersten Gang über eine Länge von etwa 1,20 m aus. Eine gute Grube konnte so über 4 Jahre Arbeit für 2 Arbeiter bieten. Die letzte Grube, die auf die oben beschriebene Weise abgebaut wurde, wurde 1955 gegraben.
