Pearl of the Kempen walk - Westerlo

Westerlo, rightly called "Pearl of the Kempen", is located in the Kempen, on the Grote Nete, surrounded by a green belt of forests and meadows. Westerlo is first mentioned in the writings in the 10th century. The name probably comes from the Germanic westara which means western and lauha which is a grove on high sandy soil.

The current municipality was formed from two mergers. In 1971 Westerlo was merged with Heultje and Voortkapel with Tongerlo, Oosterwijk and Zoerle-Parwijs. In 1977 the merger with Oevel followed. Since then, the municipality has consisted of seven sub-municipalities. The total area is 5,512 hectares and 58 hectares and as of 31 December 2016 there were 24,689 inhabitants.

The de Merode family has been present in Westerlo since the 15th century.
Several members of this noble family left their mark on the view and development of the municipality. Westerlo, together with eight other municipalities, forms the Merode area, one of the largest green areas in Flanders. An overarching vision for the future has been drawn up for this area of 1,500 ha.
