Kolberg

The Kolberg is a 91-meter high elevation in Kolberg, a district of the municipality of Heidesee in the Dahme-Spreewald district in Brandenburg.

The elevation was formed during the last Vistula glaciation. During the time of the GDR, Deutsche Post began developing FM radio transmitters and building a VHF television network in the 1950s. To ensure that the sensitive measuring devices required for this were free from electrical environmental influences, Deutsche Post chose the Kolberg as the location. On September 21, 1952, the first laboratory started its research operations there. In the following decades, the Kolberg branch of the Central Office for Radio and Television Technology, the Central Institute for Radio Technology, was established on the mountain. During this time, a measuring tower approximately 29 meters high was built.
