Estate de Breul

The oldest estate on the walk and the only one that is counted among the Stichtse Lustwarande. It existed as early as the 15th^{century and} was in noble possession for centuries; only after the French invasion at the end of the 18th century is it confiscated by^the state. In 1830 a part became private property again and the owner turned it into a real country estate. The mansion was already there; the owner had (by the famous landscape architect J.D. Zocher jr) a landscape garden laid out. The garden is still almost entirely in its original state; The house has undergone various modifications and renovations, the last of which was in 1932. In the course of time, the house has experienced many turbulent events among a multitude of owners who each used it in their own way: as a home, as housing for the German occupiers, as a school, as a boarding school and as an office. It is currently in calmer waters under the possession of Het Utrechts Landschap.
