La orilla izquierda fue sistemáticamente elevada a finales del siglo XIX. El entorno de Sint-Anneke fue una de las primeras áreas donde se transportaron lodo y arena gruesa. En el nuevo terreno surgió un árido paisaje de dunas, que sin duda ha contribuido a la creación y el éxito del cluster de restauración con playa de arena. La dinámica del viento a la altura de la saliente del Estuario de la Escalda es importante para el mantenimiento del paisaje arenoso. Desde Sint-Anneke hay una hermosa vista del resto del Noordkasteel, al otro lado de la Escalda.
