L'insediamento di Altenhof è composto dalle due fasi costruttive dell'insediamento Altenhof I, realizzato tra il 1893 e il 1907, e dell'insediamento Altenhof II, costruito tra il 1907 e il 1914. Altenhof I si trova nel quartiere Rüttenscheid di Essen, mentre Altenhof II è situato a Stadtwald. Entrambi sono stati costruiti dalla Friedrich Krupp AG per i suoi ex dipendenti. All'epoca, era un impegno sociale rivoluzionario che permetteva a pensionati, invalidi e single di vivere qui senza pagare affitto. Oggi, le parti ancora esistenti dell'insediamento di Altenhof sono una testimonianza dello sviluppo insediativo storico e fanno parte della Route della cultura industriale.
