Già all'inizio della seconda guerra mondiale, le truppe tedesche conquistarono la Francia molto rapidamente. Gli inglesi lasciarono allora massicciamente la Francia per riunirsi in Gran Bretagna.
Questa massiccia fuga era conosciuta come operazione Dynamo. Più di 300.000 soldati poterono fuggire da Dunkerque con oltre 1000 navi.
La HMS Crested Eagle era una delle molte navi meno fortunate: la nave fu bombardata da un aereo tedesco (uno Stuka) e si arenò in questo luogo. Più di 300 soldati perirono in quel rogo.
