Op de top van de Kemmelberg staat sinds 1932 een gedenkzuil als herinnering aan de vele Franse gesneuvelde soldaten. Zij vochten hier in april 1918 tijdens de Slag om de Kemmelberg. Dit ‘Monument aux Soldats Français’ symboliseert de Romeinse overwinningsgodin Victoria. De gedenkzuil wordt daarom vaak ‘Den Engel’ genoemd. Dit monument kijkt uit over het Franse massagraf aan de voet van de Kemmelberg.
