About artist Alfons Van Meirvenne:

He was born on December 6, 1932.

From 1947 to 1950 Alfons Van Meirvenne, son of a nurseryman, studied at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Sint-Niklaas with G. Fonteyne and R. Van de Velde. He then attended classes from a live model at the Royal Academy in Antwerp with J. Creytens for a year. Until 1959 he continued his studies in the painting workshop at the National Higher Institute under the direction of J. Creytens and J. Vinck.

His great talent was already evident during his training, which was repeatedly confirmed by the awarding of awards such as the Karel Verlat Prize (1952), the Triennial Prize for Painting of the city of Sint-Niklaas (1956), the Grand Prize for Painting of the city of Ostend (Europe Prize 1960), the Grand Prize of Rome for Painting (1961), and so on.

Alfons Van Meirvenne is described as a neo-expressionist animal painter. His Cry for Distress of the Animals, which was exhibited in the Antwerp Zoo in 1982 as a warning against the threat that humanity poses to animals, made a great impression.

He is also a gifted portraitist, landscape painter and a gifted sculptor. In 1989 he completed Donkey with Foal, a commission from the Provincial Government of East Flanders for the Provincial Domain in Wachtebeke.

The municipality of Beveren also owns sculptures by his hand, namely the well-known Horse defends foal in the park of Cortewalle Castle. Alfons Van Meirvenne is a nephew of Alice Van Meirvenne. In 1987 he illustrated her children's book 'Wimpie and the street dog'.
