Town Hall Square

The Raadhuisplein is a park-like square located in the center of Emmen. The square is surrounded by the Atlas Theater, the town hall, and shopping center de Weiert. The square was opened in 2015 as a connection between the center of Emmen and Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen.

As part of the Emmen Center Renewal, the municipality wanted to create a better connection between the center and the new location of the zoo. Therefore, it was decided to construct a new 'central square' above the Hondsrugweg. The square was designed by the German landscape architecture firm Latz + Partner and cost approximately 12 million euros. Water plays a key role in the square. In addition to the Hondsrugweg, there is also a large parking garage beneath the square. The square was officially opened on June 26, 2015. On the square, there is, in addition to the artwork "Egnoaber" by Nick Ervinck, a playground and skatepark. In 2016, the square won both the jury prize and the public prize at the Drenthe Architecture Award.
