Bredero’s Spaanschen Brabander speelt zich af in het Amsterdam van de late zestiende eeuw. Het maakt deel uit van de Vlaamse Canon. Het “Amsterdamse Kerkhof” dat in het stuk genoemd wordt speelt een essentiële rol in het verhaal. In de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw was het gebruikelijk om mensen te begraven rond en in de Oude Kerk. Dit centrale “kerkhoff” was dus het kerkhof waar Amsterdammers letterlijk en figuurlijk iedere dag langsliepen, een plek waar het gewone stadsleven en de dood elkaar ontmoetten.
In de Spaanschen Brabander, een van de levendigste en grappigste toneelstukken uit de Nederlandse literatuur, draait alles om bedrog, schone schijn en de dunne grens tussen slim en naïef.
