The Toplou monastery is located about 10km east of Sitia and Palekastro 6km from the road to the palm forest of Vai. Toplou Monastery or Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani is one of the most important and beautiful monasteries in Crete. It stands watch with its imposing 33-meter bell towerover a rugged, almost desert landscape. The Toplou Monastery is impressive from afar as it resembles a small fortress surrounded by a high wall of 10 meters.
