Il a fait passer en contrebande les machines à filer britanniques en ville pendant le blocus napoléonien. Indirectement, il était donc responsable de la pauvreté et de l'exploitation de la classe ouvrière de Gand. Saviez-vous qu'il était si impopulaire qu'il a dû passer la majorité de son temps en France ? Maintenant, il a une statue à Gand.
