Das Akropolis-Museum enthält die wichtigsten Kunstwerke, die auf der Akropolis gefunden wurden. Bevor dieses Museum eröffnet wurde, konnte man diese Kunstwerke im kleinen Museum oben auf der Akropolis sehen.
Sie werden im Museum auch einige leere Plätze sehen. Diese sind für die "Elgin Marbles" reserviert. Diese Stücke wurden von den Engländern von den Türken gekauft, als sie Griechenland besetzten.
Merlina Mercourri versuchte, die Elgin Marbles zurückzubekommen, hatte jedoch keinen Erfolg. Die Elgin Marbles sind im British Museum in London zu sehen.
