Das Teatro San Cassiano in Venedig war das weltweit erste öffentliche Opernhaus, eingeweiht als solches 1637. Die ersten schriftlichen Erwähnungen des Baus stammen aus dem Jahr 1581. Das Theater stand im Pfarrbezirk San Cassiano, nachdem es benannt wurde, im Stadtteil Santa Croce. Das San Cassiano gehörte der Familie Tron und war das erste öffentliche Opernhaus in dem Sinne, dass Opern für ein zahlendes Publikum inszeniert wurden. Zuvor wurden Opern nur zu privaten Zwecken aufgeführt und blieben der Aristokratie und Hofgesellschaft vorenthalten. Somit war das Teatro San Cassiano die erste Kulturinstitution, die der allgemeinen Öffentlichkeit einen Zugang zum Event „Oper“ ermöglichte.
