City walk in the fortified town of Valença

Valença still has the old characteristics of a fortified town from the 17th-18th century in the style of the French military architect Vauban. It actually consists of two forts, filled with bastions, watchtowers, massive gates and defensive walls, connected by a single bridge. The old churches and Manueline mansions inside testify to the success of the fortifications against various sieges, some even still in the 19th century.

Start at the parking lot "Fortaleza de Valença".

We first visit the southern fort. Through some chapels we reach the Porta da Coroada in the south.

For those interested, a visit to the Center for the Interpretation of Castles and Fortifications is worth it to learn all about the history of the 1319 km long border that forms the Portuguese-Spanish border and the 75 fortifications.

A slender granite column commemorates the fighters of the First World War.

Along the bridge and the Portas do Meio we walk to the second fort.

Along a postern with round arches, a passage covered by a barrel vault leads to the moat and the Fonte da Vila. We briefly enter the free Valença Museum Center.

In this area are also the main churches.

Along the Portas do Sol we leave the town.
