La Montaña Grande és un con volcànic que es va formar fa menys de 10.000 anys. El con arriba fins als 276 metres sobre el nivell del mar.
El cràter de Montaña Grande té un diàmetre d'uns 300 metres i una profunditat d'uns 50 metres. Presenta una certa asimetria per l'acció del vent durant el període de formació. En determinades zones del malpaïs hi ha diversos jameos (tub volcànic del qual cau part del sostre per gravetat). Destaca la Cueva Honda , que es va formar per una gran bombolla de gas en un tub de lava.
El litoral s'ha erosionat des de les darreres erupcions i s'han format platges en alguns llocs.
El gran camp de lava mostra l' aspecte característic del malpaís (aa) , encara que també suporta zones de superfície més llisa (pahoehoe) .
