Aarau, és la capital del cantó suís d'Argòvia i es troba el districte d'Aarau. Està situat a la costa del riu Aar i a la part sud de la serralada del Jura.Del març al setembre de 1798 Aarau fou la capital de Suïssa.
El nom Aarau ve de la paraula Arowe i aquesta ve del riu que passa per la zona que antigament s'anomenava Arula, Arola o Araris que vénen de l'alemany Au que vol dir riu.
