El Baix Empordà és una de les dues comarques en què va quedar dividit l'Empordà en la divisió comarcal de 1936. La capital de comarca i cap de partit judicial és la Bisbal d'Empordà des del segle xix. Modernament, i més en l'àmbit literari que no pas popular, és freqüent referir-se a aquestes terres empordaneses amb el sobrenom de l'Empordanet. Té 133.247 habitants .
