L'École polytechnique és una de les més conegudes i prestigioses escola d'enginyers de França. Coloquialment és anomenada també «la X» perquè al seu símbol d'armes es poden veure dos canons creuats prenent la forma de la lletra.
Fundada el 1794, l'Escola és un establiment públic d'ensenyament i recerca, sota la tutela del Ministeri de Defensa francès. L'Escola lliura històricament el diploma d'enginyer i més recentment atorga també els graus de màster i de doctorat.
