La batalla de Verdun va ser un dels principals combats de la primera Guerra Mundial lliurat entre les forces alemanyes i les forces franceses des de febrer a desembre de 1916. El 21 de febrer, els alemanys van llançar una ofensiva sobre la ciutat francesa de Verdun que ocupava una posició vital, ja que estava sobre uns turons des dels quals es dominava el riu Mosa, a l'extrem oriental de la línia de les trinxeres franceses, i representava per França un important símbol de la seva capacitat de resistència.
