Fou fundada com a colònia per Alba Longa. Després de la caiguda d'Alba, Bovillae va esdevenir independent i fou una de les trenta que el 493 aC va integrar la lliga llatina. Dionis i Plutarc l'esmenten com a ciutat ocupada pels volscs sota Coriolà, però no apareix a les guerres entre Roma i els volscs. Florus parla d'un triomf de Roma sobre Bovillae però probablement és un error. Segurament, com altres ciutats llatines, va caure en decadència al final de la República i tot i que Sul·la hi va establir una colònia militar, Ciceró parla al seu temps d'una ciutat pobre i decadent que encara era municipi romà.
