Sicília és l'illa més gran de la Mediterrània, al sud de Nàpols, entre la mar Tirrena i la Jònica, que pertany a l'estat italià i en forma una regió amb estatut especial. La capital n'és Palerm. Es divideix en nou províncies. En llatí, l'illa de forma triangular situada al sud d'Itàlia, es deia Trinacria, que significa 'triangular'. No obstant això, el seu nom es deu al fet que anteriorment els grecs l'anomenaven Sikelia, a causa que la tribu nativa eren els sículs .
