Els Apenins són una cadena muntanyosa que recorre Itàlia de nord a sud amb una longitud aproximada d'uns 1.000 km. És una de les serralades de plegament més joves del món.
Des de l'any 2000, el Ministeri de Medi Ambient d'Itàlia, seguint les recomanacions del Projecte Parc dels Apenins d'Europa, ha estat definint el Sistema dels Apenins per incloure les muntanyes del nord de Sicília, per a una distància total de 1500 km. El sistema forma un arc que tanca el costat est del Mar Lígur i la Mar Tirrena.
