La Piazza Castelnuovo, juntament amb la contigua Piazza Ruggero Settimo, formen un únic espai urbà, comunament anomenat Piazza Politeama, gràcies a la presència del Teatro Politeama , el segon teatre més important de la ciutat després del Teatre Massimo.
La plaça representa una de les places més populars de la ciutat.
A la Piazza Castelnuovo hi ha una estructura anomenada “Palchetto della Musica” (obra de Salvatore Valenti), el monument a Carlo Cottone (obra de Giovan Battista Palazzotto i Domenico Costantino), les escultures “Nautica” (obra de Mario Rutelli), “Lavoro”. " (obra de Benedetto Civiletti) i "Senzatetto" (obra de Pasquale Civiletti).
La plaça porta el nom de Carlo Cottone, príncep de Castelnuovo, un dels defensors de la Constitució siciliana de 1812.
