La Praça do Comércio , va ser el terreny on s'assentava el Palau Reial de Lisboa durant més de 200 anys. L'any 1511, D. Manuel I va canviar la seua residència des del Castell de Sant Jordi a aquest lloc al costat del Tajo. Aquest palau i la seua biblioteca amb més de setanta mil volums va ser destruït pel Terratrèmol de Lisboa. En la reconstrucció, la plaça es va convertir en element fonamental dels plans del Marquès de Pombal. Els nous edificis, amb arquejades envoltant la plaça estan ocupats actualment per ministeris.
