L'església va ser elevada a la categoria de basílica i la proclamació solemne va tenir lloc el 5 de juliol del 2015.
Aquest temple es va construir per reemplaçar l'anterior. La construcció va començar l'1 de juny de 1784 i va finalitzar el 1811.
La façana principal està flanquejada per dues torres, rematades per un frontó triangular. Als costats de l'entrada principal, en nínxols, entre les columnes de sis metres d'alçada, hi ha estàtues dels profetes Jeremies i Isaïes , amb inscripcions en llatí. Al centre, sobre el gran finestral, hi ha l'escut d'armes de Joan VI de Portugal , que el 1822 va concedir al santuari els mateixos honors i privilegis que a les Misericòrdies.
Al pati de la basílica, també dissenyat per Amarante, hi ha vuit estàtues de personatges que van participar en la condemna, el patiment i la mort de Jesucrist.
