El Sangàrius fou un dels principals rius de l'Anatòlia. El seu naixement era a les muntanyes Adoreos prop de Sàngia, a Frígia, i a tocar de la frontera amb Galàcia. El seu curs era tortuós i una part formava la frontera entre Frígia i Bitínia. Els principals afluents eren l'Alandre , Bathys, Thymbres i Gal·lus.
En temps dels bizantins un pont construït per Justinià I creuava el riu. A l'edat mitjana hi va viure la tribu Söğüt, que va fundar l'estat otomà.
La font és el Bayat Yaylası, un altiplà al nord-est d'Afyon. Se li ajunta el Porsuk Çayı prop de la població de Polatlı; el riu corre a través de les planes d'Adapazarı Ovası i desaigua a la mar Negra.
